R. Daneel by Philip Rice
Back in 2008, a good friend of mine passed away unexpectedly. He was a gifted storyteller and filmmaker, and his often robot-themed work reminded me of Isaac Asimov. That Summer, I recorded a series of brief improvisational and experimental works in his honor. The song fragments were never given titles at that time. I've revisited those pieces year after year, having made a promise to myself that if they ever "spoke" to me in a new way, I would flesh them out and turn them into more cohesive musical works.
This year (2020) is the year they began to speak. And so I present the first of these rejuvenated "fragments," this one named after an iconic Asimov character that reminds me of my friend, Peter Rasmussen, who is still missed and remembered to this day.
Parts of it sound (to me) like they could be the intro to a sci-fi television show or something.
